Zhongli Talesun Solar and Dow Chemical Successfully Co-developed “PID ZERO” Module

Changshu, China – May,19, 2014 – Zhongli Talesun Solar, a professional solar photovoltaic products manufacturer based in Jiangsu, China, announced today that researchers from Zhongli Talesun and The Dow Chemical Company successfully co-developed all new “PID ZERO” module series.

Potential Induced Degradation (PID), a phenomenon which has complicated mechanism, mainly has three factors: the first is migration of sodium ion from material under high voltage, the second is “surface polarity” caused by charge redistribution, the third is electrochemical corrosion from related circuit. Long term PID will affect solar modules’ power generation, power reduction may even exceed by 70 percent, thus seriously impacting the entire power station.

The “PID ZERO” module, which leverages Dow’s new encapsulating material, demonstrates that the merging of Zhongli Talesun and Dow’s technologies effectively creates a product that can eliminate PID.

“We have innovatively adopted Dow’s new encapsulating material,” said Paul, vice president of R&D department, Zhongli Talesun. “Combined with reformation of our cell technology, we could fundamentally eliminate the generation and migration of sodium ion, providing modules with zero power degradation from PID.”

According to the third-party, full-scale module test report from Photovoltaik Insitut Berlin (PI-Berlin), a batch of Zhongli Talesun’s “PID ZERO” samples were exposed to 1,000 volts of bias voltage under the condition of 85 degrees Celsius and 85 percent relative humidity for 672 hours, the equivalent approximation to simulate 25 years in a normal environment. The tests showed that all samples resulted with PID at less than one percent, far less than the industry standard (85 degrees Celsius and 85 percent relative humidity for 96 hours) of five percent, and setting an unrivaled industry achievement. THE “PID ZERO” module also showed excellent stability in a extreme simulated environment. Its long-term energy generating efficiency and stability are far better than traditional modules, which will bring customers benefits of stable power generation and much lower risk.

“The high volume resistivity of Dow’s new encapsulating material and our back-integrated polymer expertise have enabled this development of a PID Zero module,” said Sang-Ho Kang, global business director, Dow Photovoltaic. “We are proud to collaborate with a company as innovative as Zhongli Talesun Solar.”

“Innovation is the soul of business development, especially in the competitive PV industry,” commented Mr. Zhou Jianxin, president of Zhongli Talesun Solar, “Zhongli Talesun Solar, as the first company inChinato jointly develop a “PID ZERO” module with Dow continues to position itself at the forefront of the industry.”

Zhongli Talesun has begun trial production for the “PID ZERO” modules, and will start volume production after obtaining the TÜV-SÜD certification in the near term. Zhongli Talesun will also showcase the “PID ZERO” module on the SNEC 2014, International Photovoltaic Power Generation Conference and Exhibition at booth #N1, 510.
